Koto Lesson
The koto came to Japan from China in the sixth century. It was initially used only within the Imperial Court. However during the Edo period the koto became popular among wealthy people as a sign of culture (particularly for young girls and women). Music only for koto, called sokyoku, was played for a time by a class of blind musicians. It is from these musicians that the early classical compositions and techniques arose. In an introductory course in playing the 13-string Japanese koto, students will become familiar with the basic hira-choshi tuning and learn fundamental playing techniques through well-known melodies.

Shamisen Lesson
The shamisen is a type of lute with three strings. The sound box of a shamisen is square and, like a banjo, covered with a skin. In the Edo period the shamisen became a very popular instrument in the entertainment districts of Japanese cities. Jiuta(地唄) is or literally "earthen music" is a more classical style of shamisen music.
A lesson usually goes from 30-60 minutes. Each student will receive a personalized lesson plan which suits the individual goals of the student.
